Woad

Woad “Isatis tinctoria” is a well-known flowering plant, always appreciate for its important source of blue dye. Between XIV and XV century the trade of woad and consequently the farming had a crucial importance through Tuscany economy.
Its blue pigment was used for the fabrics dying and in many artistic fields such as manuscripts, vase decorations and several pictures made by famous Renaissance’s artists. The most famous one is Piero Della Francesca; his father was a rich merchant of woad in Sansepolcro (also our hometown).
